Expectations in Mentoring
What do we expect from our Mentors?
We expect our Mentors to make a commitment to a journey with a young person which is somewhere between 12-18 months in times
We expect them to contact their mentees once a week and to take them out or do an activity every other week
We expect the Mentors to have fun and enjoy watching their Mentee grow and to develop.
So what else
Ok we also expect our Mentors to make a few notes about the activities and the contact and record them for us
We also expect our Mentors to keep receipts so we can reimburse them for reasonable expenses
We also expect our Mentors to be in face to face contact with the Youth Mentoring Trust Staff once a month for supervision (very flexible times and places)
Our Mentors complete training and a police check before starting with our service
What people say about us
Parents of Mentees have commented:
Excellent communication between Trust staff and my family
..this was the best thing that could happen to my family...
Mentors have said:
'I feel as if I am learning from the mentee as much as the mentee is from me'
'Feeling as if I am giving back and doing my small thing to help someone'
'Fulfilling what I want to do in life'
What we need (aka our wish list)
What do we need?
- We need community minded people to step up and be willing to mentor a young person. We need people from all walks of life, and all ethnicities
- We need any other assistance that is available. People may not be able to take on a full mentoring relationship, but they may have hobbies, interests, or work situations that they may be willing to share with a young person to help open up their minds to other possibilities
- We need funding, while we have not yet been unable to run volunteer services because of money will still need funding to help us run our services
- We need to have fun, we need to enjoy watching these young people grow and develop
How can you help?
- You can help us, by giving us YOU, give your time, and your energy.
- You may be able to help us with services or goods that we may need
- We can help you to spend your money (on us) if you have to, but we are more than happy to take your time instead.
